Frey is located in Nahuel Huapi National Park, just outside Bariloche. The trailhead can be reached by car, taxi, or public transport from the city center.
-
A scenic mountain trail leads to Refugio Frey through forests, rivers, and increasingly dramatic granite scenery. The hike is 10 km (6.2 mi) long with 930 m (3,050 ft) of elevation gain. Most hikers take 3 to 4.5 hours to reach the hut, while very fit hikers carrying lightweight packs can complete the approach in as little as 2.5 hours.
From granite walls just above the refuge to remote alpine towers deeper in the basin, climbing approaches range from 15 minutes to over 2 hours, depending on the objective.
-
The historic Refugio Frey offers dormitory-style accommodation, meals, and a welcoming atmosphere for climbers and hikers. Staying at the hut allows you to travel with a lighter pack and maximize your time on the rock.
The refuge serves breakfast and dinner, and can also prepare packed lunches for climbing days. Beer, wine, and soft drinks are available for purchase, and payment can be made by cash or credit card.
-
A designated campground is located next to the refuge for those who prefer to camp. Campers have access to basic facilities and spectacular views of Frey's granite spires, all while staying close to the climbing.
Even if you choose to camp, you can still enjoy meals and drinks at the refuge, making it easy to combine the mountain experience of camping with the comfort of hut services.
Tip: During the summer season, both the hut and campground can be busy, so advance reservations are recommended.
Best Season for Climbing in Frey
Climbing is possible in Frey for most of the year, but the prime season runs from November through April, when conditions are generally more stable and days are longer.
Mid December, January, and February to mid March offer the best chances for extended weather windows, making summer the most reliable time for longer routes and multi-day climbing trips. That said, Frey is a true mountain environment: strong winds, sudden storms, and even occasional snowfall can occur at any time—even in the middle of summer.
One of the advantages of climbing in Frey during the summer is the variety of aspects. Depending on the weather, temperatures, and wind, it's usually possible to choose routes in the sun or seek shade on warmer days.
Season Highlights
November–April: Best overall climbing conditions
Mid December–February: Most reliable weather windows
March–April: Fewer people, cooler temperatures, beautiful autumn colors
Mountain weather can change quickly in any season
Sun and shade options available throughout the summer
With the right objective and a bit of flexibility, Frey offers excellent climbing conditions for much of the year.
